September is National Recovery Month, otherwise known as Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month. It is a time to appreciate the vital work done by those in the mental health and substance use treatment fields and celebrate people in recovery. Just as we respect people with health conditions such as heart disease or diabetes to make positive changes in their lives, we can also celebrate those with substance use disorders striving to improve their health.
Would you like to help educate people in your area about the value of drug and alcohol addiction treatment? Contact Serenity House Detox Florida at 866.294.5306 for more information about Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month.
Drug and Alcohol Addiction Treatment Offers Hope
Drug and alcohol addiction affects millions of Americans and those who love them. It is a devastating disease that can destroy families, ruin careers, and, ultimately, cost people their lives. For all these reasons, understandably, a lot of the focus on substance use disorder is negative. But there is much to celebrate too, and National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month allows people to do so.
During Recovery Month, tens of thousands of treatment programs and centers across the U.S. organize special events to help spread the hopeful message of recovery. Speakers have an opportunity to share their own struggles and successes with substance use and mental disorders. Speaking out helps to destroy the stigmas around these issues and inspires others to seek help.
The Theme of National Recovery Month in 2021
Each year the organizers of Recovery Month select a different theme to help focus the message of treatment and recovery. In 2021, the theme is “Recovery is for Everyone: Every Person, Every Family, Every Community.” Organizers are hopeful that the idea will remind us that mental health and substance use disorders can affect anyone.
How to Participate in Recovery Month
If you would like to help educate your community about the value of recovery, there are many ways to get involved. Start by contacting a local recovery center or 12-Step program to learn what opportunities are available. If no local observances are happening in your area, organize one.
Plan an Event
Visit NAADAC.org to view events around the country and to learn more about planning your own. You can also register your event at the website so that others can find it.
Secure a Proclamation from the Mayor
A mayoral proclamation recognizing Recovery Month is a great way to bring attention to the cause. Contact your city’s mayor to see if there are already plans for a public signing ceremony. The NAADAC website provides examples of proclamations to help. They also encourage that you post your signed proclamation on the site.
Contact Local Media
You don’t have to be a reporter to suggest a story idea to local media sources. Reach out to your local paper or news channel to let them know about Recovery Month and any events that may already be scheduled. Most local news sources will be happy to help spread the word about such important and impactful happenings.
Host an Open House
If you work at a mental health or substance use treatment center, consider hosting an open house to educate the public about your services. You might also use the opportunity to raise funds for your agency. Clients can speak about the value of the assistance they received from your organization to help the community understand just how vital your services are.
